A mat that moves, a puddle that escapes, or a corner that curls up are the three complaints that matter, because the first is a safety issue and the other two defeat the mat's job. Work through the causes in order: pedal clearance first, then grip, then fit, then edge height, and only then the mat itself. Never drive with a mat you know can reach the pedals.

The driver mat slides toward the pedals

Stop and refit it before driving further. Check that nibs or retention devices are engaged, that no factory mat is stacked underneath raising it, and that the mat shape matches the footwell. If the mat still moves, trim or replace it: a mat that can reach a pedal is not a mat to live with, whatever it cost.

Water pools off the mat onto the carpet

The mat is either flat, too small, or full. Empty pooled water before it overflows, and check whether the mat has raised edges or a dish at all: flat mats cannot hold a puddle, whatever their material. Replace a flat mat with a deep-dish or liner-style mat for winter use, and size the replacement to the full footwell, not just the middle.

The mat corners curl up

Curling usually means a stiff compound in cold weather or a mat cut too large for the footwell. Warm the mat, refit it flat, and trim any corner that is forced up by the sill or seat rail. If curling returns every cold snap, the compound is wrong for your climate and a flexible rubber or TPE set is the fix.

The mat fits the front but not the rear

Rear footwells have their own shape, with seat rails, humps and storage boxes changing the floor. Do not force a front mat into the rear or cut a rear liner to a front shape. Check the listing for the exact rear layout, including bench versus bucket seats and any under-seat storage, and buy the rear piece made for that layout.

The mat smells strongly after weeks in the car

Air the mat outside for a day, wash it with mild soap and water, and let it dry fully before refitting. If the smell persists after washing and airing, the compound is the cause rather than dirt, and a TPE set is the usual replacement for smell-sensitive cabins. Never mask a strong mat smell with sprays that add their own film to the surface.

Questions, answered

Can I use clips or tape to stop a mat sliding?

Only if the mat maker offers a retention device for your car. Tape, extra clips and home-made anchors can interfere with pedals or airbag sensors and should not be improvised. A mat that will not stay put on its own grip and shape is the wrong mat for that footwell.

Why does water sit on my mat instead of draining?

That is the mat working as intended: a good mat holds water until you empty it. Drainage holes would send the water straight to the carpet, which defeats the purpose. Empty the mat regularly in wet weather instead of looking for a draining design.

Should winter mats be removed in summer?

They can stay in year-round, and most owners leave them. Summer dust, sand and spills are the same protection job in lighter form. Remove them only if you prefer a carpet look for a season and accept the extra cleaning that follows.
