Fire Pits
Fire pits ranked on fuel, smoke behaviour, size and how much work each fire asks of you.
A fire pit is really a fuel decision wearing a shape decision. Wood pits give the crackle, the smell and the long evening, and they ask for dry wood, a place to store it and ash cleanup the next morning. Propane firebowls give a flame at the turn of a knob, no ash and no smoke in anyone's face, and they ask for a tank, a hose and a check of the connections. Smokeless wood pits sit between the two: a double wall and a second burn of the gases cut visible smoke, but only when the wood is dry and the fire is built small and hot.
The twelve pits below cover the honest spread. Solo Stove supplies the smokeless ladder, from the carryable Ranger to the group-sized Yukon, with the Bonfire in the middle for most patios. TIKI and East Oak offer rival smokeless designs at two sizes each. Outland Living covers propane in a big patio bowl and a smaller camping bowl. BioLite adds a battery fan that actively feeds the fire and lets the same box grill. BALI OUTDOORS, Amazon Basics and Sunnydaze cover the traditional open bowl, with a grill, a lattice screen or a patterned bowl respectively. Every pick is sold on Amazon, every ASIN is wired from two agreeing sources, and every image is the listing's own main photo, curl-verified.

The best fire pits for 2027, from smokeless wood bowls to propane firebowls and a fan-fed grill pit, ranked on fuel, smoke, size and cleanup.

This ranking judges smokeless pits on the fire they actually produce, not the word on the box. Double-wall airflow pits from Solo, TIKI and East Oak are ranked against the fan-fed BioLite, and every pick is judged with the same caveat: dry wood and a hot, small fire make the claim true, and damp wood breaks it. Traditional open bowls are excluded here, however good their fires are, because they make no low-smoke claim to test.

Propane pits are judged on a different promise from wood pits: not atmosphere, but ease. This ranking therefore weights instant lighting, zero ash, included kit and packability ahead of flame picture, and it is honest that a gas flame never crackles like wood. Size decides the rest: a 24 in bowl for a patio, a 19 in bowl for a campsite or a small patio.

Cooking over a fire pit is a control problem, not a size problem. This ranking therefore favours pits where food can move over or away from the heat, and where the fire itself can be steadied: a swinging grill on the BALI bowl, a fan on the BioLite, and a large stable bowl on the Sunnydaze for kettle and grate cooking. Pure atmosphere pits with no cooking route are excluded, however good their fires are.
