Work Light Not Charging or Dim: Fixes (2027)
Fixes for the two most common work light problems: a light that will not charge and a light that has gone dim.

Most work light failures are power problems, not light problems. A light that will not charge usually has a cable, port or battery issue, and a light that has gone dim usually has a mode, battery or lens issue. Work through the fixes below in order, from the cheapest cause to the most expensive, before replacing the light.
Light will not charge by USB
Try a different cable and a different charger, since micro-USB cables fail often and many phone chargers deliver too little current for a work light. Clean the port gently with a dry wooden toothpick, removing lint and grime that block contact. If the light still shows no charging indicator, try a full overnight charge, since a deeply drained cell can take hours before the indicator appears.
Platform light will not turn on with a known good battery
Check that the battery is fully seated and locked, since a pack that looks seated can sit a millimeter short of contact. Test the same pack in another tool to rule out a dead pack, and clean the light's terminals with a dry cloth. If the light has a lockout or mode button sequence, press and hold the power button for several seconds, since some lights ship in a transport lock state.
Light is dimmer than when new
First check the mode: many lights cycle through high, medium and low, and a single press can leave the light on low without the owner noticing. Next check the battery, since a weak or aging pack sags under load and dims the output. Finally clean the lens with a soft cloth, since shop grime, overspray and smoke film can cut visible output dramatically without any electrical fault.
Light shuts off after a few minutes on high
This is usually heat or battery protection, not a defect. High modes draw hard current, and a small pack or an old cell can trip protection early. Drop to medium, fit a larger pack, or let the light cool between high-mode bursts. If the shutdown happens on every mode with a fresh pack, the internal cell or driver may have failed and the light needs service or replacement.
Tripod or tower light flickers or cuts out
Check the cord first: a damaged extension cord or a loose plug causes most flicker, and swapping the cord is a fast test. For cordless stands, reseat the battery and check for dust in the battery well. For corded stands, keep connections dry and off wet ground, since moisture in a plug causes intermittent cuts that look like a light fault.
Questions, answered
Can I replace the battery in a rechargeable stick light?
Usually no. Most stick and pocket lights seal the cell inside, so a faded cell means replacing the light. Platform lights avoid this, since the battery is a separate part that can be swapped or replaced.
Why does my light dim in cold weather?
Lithium cells lose capacity in the cold, so runtime and peak output drop on winter jobs. Keep spare packs warm in a pocket or a cab, and expect shorter high-mode runs until the pack warms up.
When should I replace instead of repair?
Replace when the cell is sealed and faded, when the driver or lens is cracked, or when repair costs approach a new light's price. Repair when the fault is a cable, a port, a pack or a mount, since those are cheap parts with easy fixes.
