The Best Diaper Pails (2027)
The best diaper pails for 2027, from a steel ordinary-bag pail to foot-pedal refill pails, ranked on odor sealing, bag system, opening style and capacity.

The short answer
For most parents the best diaper pail is the Ubbi Steel Diaper Pail in white, because steel does not absorb odor and it takes ordinary trash bags, so there is no refill to run out of. If you want a foot pedal and the most widely stocked refill, the Diaper Genie Complete is the long-running answer, and the Signature is the Genie to buy if you prefer tear-off bags to continuous film. For a fully hands-free drop, the Dekor EKO Plus is the largest and widest choice, with the Classic as the middle size and the Mini for tiny spaces. The Munchkin STEP adds baking-soda odor help, the Diaper Champ is the cheapest lifetime route, and the Munchkin Toss pack covers travel.

Best overall
Ubbi Steel Diaper Pail, White
The steel pail that takes ordinary bags: a sliding lid, rubber seals and a childproof lock, with no proprietary refill to buy.

Strengths
- Powder-coated steel body, which does not absorb odor the way plastic can over months of use
- Sliding lid with rubber seals, designed to disturb less air on opening than a lift lid
- Works with any standard trash bag, so bag cost and availability stop being a nursery problem
- Childproof lock keeps small hands out of the pail, and the slim 8.4 inch width fits beside a changer
Limitations
- The 5 inch diameter opening is tight for bulky toddler diapers and cloth inserts
- Steel needs dry-cloth cleaning only, per the maker, since water and abrasives risk rust
- At 5.15 lb and 19.5 inches tall it is a solid, heavy-feeling object to move for emptying
What owners report
Most praised
- Parents say the nursery stops smelling like a nursery once the steel pail replaces a plastic one that had soaked up odor
- The sliding lid gets praise from night changers who can open and close it with one hand in the dark
- Families like never having to check a refill brand before a shop, because ordinary kitchen bags fit
Common complaints
- Some owners find the opening too narrow for larger diapers and have to fold or push them through
- A few report rust spots after wiping the pail with a damp cloth against the maker's dry-cloth advice
- Owners note the pail shows fingerprints and scuffs on the powder coating in a busy nursery
| Material | Powder-coated alloy steel |
|---|---|
| Dimensions | 11.4 x 8.4 x 19.5 in |
| Opening | Sliding top, 5 in diameter |
| Capacity | Holds up to 55 newborn diapers, per maker |
| Bags | Any standard trash bag, no special bag required |
| Lock | Childproof lock |
Best for: Parents who want to stop buying branded refills and want a pail that will not absorb odor into plastic over time.
Skip if: You want a foot pedal; this pail opens with a sliding lid that needs a hand, and the opening is only 5 inches across.
Best foot-pedal pail
Diaper Genie Complete Diaper Pail, White
The long-running foot-pedal pail: double clamps, a carbon filter and a continuous multi-layer refill, ready out of the box.

Strengths
- Double Air-Tite clamps plus an activated carbon filter in the lid, two barriers instead of one lid
- Foot pedal gives a no-bend, hands-free toss at 27 inches tall, a comfortable changing height
- Arrives fully assembled with a full-size refill, so it works the day it arrives
- Continuous multi-layer film can be cut to any length, so a half-full bag is not wasted film
Limitations
- Round refills are a recurring purchase, and the pail is not designed for ordinary trash bags
- At 8.36 lb it is heavier than the plastic pails here, and its D shape needs wall clearance for the pedal
- The refill holds up to 270 newborn diapers, a figure that falls sharply with larger toddler diapers
What owners report
Most praised
- Parents say the foot pedal is the feature they miss most when they use any other pail, because both hands stay on the baby
- The carbon filter plus clamps combination gets credit for a nursery that smells neutral between bag changes
- Owners like that the pail arrives assembled, with no build step at the exact moment a newborn arrives
Common complaints
- Some owners find the refill cost adds up faster than expected once diapers get bigger and bags fill sooner
- A few report the clamp area needing a firm push to close fully, or a puff of air escapes on opening
- Owners note the tall D shape is awkward in a corner, where the pedal swing needs room
| Dimensions | 12.06 x 9.38 x 27 in |
|---|---|
| Weight | 8.36 lb |
| Opening | Step-on foot pedal |
| Odor system | Double Air-Tite clamps plus carbon filter |
| Refill | Diaper Genie round refill, holds up to 270 newborn diapers |
| Colours | White, Gray, Blue, Pink, per maker |
Best for: Parents who want the most widely stocked refill system and a no-bend foot-pedal toss at changing-table height.
Skip if: You resent proprietary refills; this pail only works properly with Diaper Genie round refills.
Best tear-off bag pail
Diaper Genie Signature Diaper Pail, White
The tear-off-bag Genie: perforated Easy Roll bags on a roll, a wide opening and a foot pedal, with no cutting and tying.

Strengths
- Easy Roll refill gives 18 perforated, opaque, tear-off bags, so bag changes need no cutting or tying
- One Easy Roll refill holds up to 846 newborn diapers across its bags, per the maker, so refills last months
- Wide disposal opening and foot-pedal operation suit bulky diapers and one-handed use
- Odor-locking clamps carry over from the Complete, so the sealing idea is familiar to Genie owners
Limitations
- The pail itself holds up to 47 newborn diapers, so the big refill figure is storage, not pail capacity
- At 14.31 inches wide it is the widest pail here and needs a genuinely clear nursery corner
- Easy Roll bags only fit this refill line, so a shop that stocks round refills will not help this pail
What owners report
Most praised
- Parents say tear-off bags remove the fiddliest step of the older Genie system, which was cutting film to length
- The wide opening gets praise from parents of toddlers whose diapers no longer fit narrow pail mouths
- Owners like buying refills rarely, since one roll covers a long stretch of changes
Common complaints
- Some owners find the wide body dominates a small nursery and blocks a drawer or door swing
- A few report a bag tearing at the perforation when pulled too fast, spilling the refill roll
- Owners note the pail still needs emptying often, because the refill total is not the pail total
| Dimensions | 14.31 x 10.25 x 27.63 in |
|---|---|
| Weight | 7.7 lb |
| Opening | Step-on foot pedal, wide opening |
| Pail capacity | Up to 47 newborn diapers, per maker |
| Refill | Easy Roll refill, 18 tear-off bags, up to 846 newborn diapers |
| Model | I000379 |
Best for: Parents who like the Genie clamp system but want pre-cut bags they can tear off instead of continuous film to cut.
Skip if: You want the cheapest refill route; Easy Roll refills are a Genie-only purchase, and the pail itself is wide.
Best steel Genie
Diaper Genie Platinum Diaper Pail Gift Set, White
The steel Genie: a stainless body, foot-pedal hands-free use and two Easy Roll refills in the gift-set box.

Strengths
- Stainless steel body, the Genie line's answer to plastic absorbing odor over time
- Foot-pedal, hands-free operation, so diapers go in without touching the pail
- Gift set includes two Easy Roll refills, 48 bags in total, so the first refill purchase is months away
- Easy Roll tear-off bags keep bag changes to a pull and a tie, with no film to cut
Limitations
- Steel adds weight and a premium tier over the plastic Genie pails, for the same refill system
- The gift-set box is bulky to store, and the pail photo on the listing is a composite set shot
- Easy Roll refills remain Genie-only, so the steel body does not free you from the refill line
What owners report
Most praised
- Parents say the steel body feels like the pail that will survive a second child without smelling of the first
- The bundled refills get praise from gift buyers, who like giving a pail that works for months out of the box
- Foot-pedal owners like that the steel version keeps the hands-free habit they already had with a plastic Genie
Common complaints
- Some owners find the steel body heavier to lift out for a full bag change than the plastic Genies
- A few report fingerprints showing on the steel in a bright nursery, needing a wipe to look tidy
- Owners note the gift-set price is hard to compare with the bare plastic pails, since refills are bundled in
| Material | Stainless steel |
|---|---|
| Opening | Hands-free foot pedal |
| Refill | Easy Roll refills, 2 refills with 48 bags total in the gift set |
| Odor system | Odor-locking clamps, per maker |
| Colour | White |
| Set includes | Pail plus 2 Easy Roll refills |
Best for: Parents who want Genie refills and foot-pedal use, but in a steel body that will not hold odor like plastic.
Skip if: You want the simplest Genie buy; this gift set bundles refills and a steel body at the premium tier.
Best for cloth diapers
Diaper Dekor EKO Plus Diaper Pail, Gray
The largest Dekor: a step, drop, done pedal pail in 70 percent recycled ABS, with the widest opening in the Dekor range.

Strengths
- Step, drop, done operation: pedal opens the lid, the diaper drops through a spring trap door, and it closes itself
- ABS body made from 70 percent recycled materials, per the maker, with a closed-cell surface that resists absorbing odor
- Arrives fully assembled with a full-size refill already installed
- Maker describes the Plus as having the largest opening of any diaper pail, which suits cloth diapers
Limitations
- Plus refills fit Plus pails only, so buying the wrong Dekor size wastes a refill box
- The trap door that seals odor also narrows the drop path for very bulky items
- At 26 litres it is large to empty, and a full bag is heavy to lift out of the access door
What owners report
Most praised
- Cloth-diaper parents say the wide opening is the first pail mouth that takes a stuffed cloth diaper without a shove
- Parents like the true hands-free routine, since the pedal and trap door mean no hand touches the lid
- Owners say bag changes feel quick once learned, because the access door and cutter are in one place
Common complaints
- Some owners buy Classic refills by mistake and discover they do not fit the Plus pail
- A few report the trap door catching on a bulky diaper and needing a second pedal press
- Owners note the large body is hard to hide in a small nursery, even though the colour is neutral
| Capacity | 26 litres |
|---|---|
| Opening | Step-on pedal, spring-loaded trap door |
| Material | ABS, 70 percent recycled materials, per maker |
| Model | 2-12226 |
| Refill | Dekor Plus refill, pre-installed |
| Colour | Gray |
Best for: Parents with cloth diapers or bulky toddler diapers who need the biggest mouth and a fully hands-free drop.
Skip if: You have a tight nursery corner; this is Dekor's largest pail and it needs floor space to match.
Best middle size
Diaper Dekor EKO Classic Diaper Pail, White
The middle Dekor: the same step, drop, done system in a 15 litre body that suits an ordinary nursery corner.

Strengths
- Same step, drop, done pedal and trap-door system as the Plus, in a smaller body
- 15 litre capacity with a Classic refill that holds up to 495 newborn diapers, per the maker
- 70 percent recycled ABS body, per the maker, that resists absorbing odor over time
- Arrives fully assembled with a full-size refill already installed
Limitations
- Classic refills fit Classic pails only, and the size label sits inside the access door, easy to miss
- The mid-size body fills faster than the Plus, so bag changes come more often in a heavy-change household
- The trap door needs a clean drop; a diaper left half in the door can prop it open
What owners report
Most praised
- Parents say the Classic is the Dekor that actually fits the space beside the changer without rearranging the room
- The pedal routine gets praise from parents holding a baby, since no hand is needed to open the pail
- Owners like that the pail arrives ready, with the refill already inside and no assembly at newborn time
Common complaints
- Some owners find the opening snug for larger toddler diapers after months of easy newborn use
- A few report the refill running out sooner than the newborn figure suggests, once diapers grow
- Owners note the white body shows scuffs from the pedal and access door over time
| Capacity | 15 litres |
|---|---|
| Opening | Step-on pedal, spring-loaded trap door |
| Material | ABS, 70 percent recycled materials, per maker |
| Model | 2-11221 |
| Refill | Dekor Classic refill, up to 495 newborn diapers, per maker |
| Colour | White |
Best for: Parents who want Dekor's hands-free system without giving up the floor space the Plus demands.
Skip if: You need the widest mouth for cloth; the Classic opening is smaller than the Plus, and refills are size-specific.
Best small pail
Diaper Dekor EKO Mini Diaper Pail, White
The small Dekor: the same pedal and trap-door system shrunk to 9 litres for a bathroom, office or tiny nursery.

Strengths
- Smallest Dekor body, at 9 litres, for corners where a full pail will not fit
- Same hands-free step, drop, done pedal and trap door as the larger Dekors
- Light at 3.7 lb, so it moves easily between rooms or to a grandparent's house
- 70 percent recycled ABS body, per the maker, in the same odor-resistant material as the range
Limitations
- Mini refills fit Mini pails only, and the small refill holds fewer diapers than the Classic or Plus
- The small body fills fast in a newborn household, so bag changes become a frequent chore
- The narrow body can tip if the pedal is pressed hard on a slick floor without a mat under it
What owners report
Most praised
- Parents in small flats say the Mini is the only proper pail that fits beside the changer at all
- Second-pail owners like having one in the living area, so night changes do not mean a trip to the nursery
- Owners say the pedal still works one-handed, even at this small size, which is not true of every mini bin
Common complaints
- Some owners find they are changing the bag every day or two with a newborn, which defeats the point of a pail
- A few report the small trap door struggling with bulky overnight diapers
- Owners note the light body slides on hard floors when the pedal is pressed firmly
| Capacity | 9 litres |
|---|---|
| Weight | 3.7 lb |
| Opening | Step-on pedal, spring-loaded trap door |
| Material | ABS, 70 percent recycled materials, per maker |
| Model | 2-10121 |
| Refill | Dekor Mini refill |
Best for: Parents short on floor space, or anyone who wants a second pail near a second changing spot.
Skip if: This is your only pail for a newborn; at 9 litres it will need emptying far more often than its bigger siblings.
Best baking-soda pail
Munchkin STEP Diaper Pail, Arm and Hammer
The baking-soda pail: a step-on pail with a lavender-scented PUCK, a self-sealing bag and a built-in bag cutter.

Strengths
- Arm and Hammer lavender-scented baking soda PUCK sits in the pail to help with odor between changes
- Self-sealing Snap, Seal and Toss bag system seals odor in as the lid closes
- Built-in bag cutter makes removing a full bag a cut, not a wrestle with scissors
- Each 7-layer refill ring holds up to 272 newborn diapers, per the maker
Limitations
- Refill rings fit STEP and PAIL pails, not the older Arm and Hammer pail, so compatibility needs checking
- The PUCK is a consumable, so odor help fades if it is not replaced on schedule
- The lavender scent divides households, and it cannot be switched off while the PUCK is fitted
What owners report
Most praised
- Parents say the pail smells fresher on opening than a plain-lid pail, thanks to the baking soda cartridge
- The self-sealing bag gets praise from parents who hated tying off a smelly bag by hand
- Owners like the built-in cutter, which turns a full-bag removal into a quick snip
Common complaints
- Some owners find the lavender scent too strong in a small nursery, especially at night
- A few report the PUCK running out without warning, and odor returning until it is replaced
- Owners note the refill rings cost more per bag than ordinary trash bags, even with the seal
| Opening | Step-on |
|---|---|
| Odor system | Lavender-scented baking soda PUCK plus self-sealing bag |
| Refill | 7-layer refill ring, up to 272 newborn diapers, per maker |
| Bag change | Built-in bag cutter |
| Model | 15901 |
| Includes | Pail, PUCK, starter refill ring, Snap, Seal and Toss bag |
Best for: Parents who want odor help from baking soda as well as a seal, and who like a bag that seals itself on closing.
Skip if: You dislike scented products; the lavender PUCK is part of the system, and the refill rings are Munchkin-only.
Best universal Munchkin pail
Munchkin UV Diaper Pail, White
The universal Munchkin pail: it takes Munchkin refill rings and Snap, Seal and Toss bags, plus Nursery Fresh refills.

Strengths
- Compatible with all Munchkin branded refill rings and Snap, Seal and Toss bags, plus Nursery Fresh refills, per the listing
- Includes a UV Snap, Seal and Toss bag and a UV refill ring in the box
- Self-sealing bag system, shared with the STEP, seals odor as the lid closes
- Registry-friendly universal design, so a gift buyer does not need to know your exact refill stock
Limitations
- Listings disagree on the opening mechanism, with step pedal and motion-sensor wording both appearing, so check the current listing before buying
- It is still a Munchkin-system pail, so ordinary trash bags are not its designed refill
- The premium tier buys compatibility, not a larger pail, so capacity is not the reason to choose it
What owners report
Most praised
- Parents say the compatibility is the real feature, since refills bought for an older Munchkin pail still fit
- The self-sealing bag gets praise for keeping odor in during the walk to the outside bin
- Owners like receiving it as a registry gift, because it does not demand one exact refill from day one
Common complaints
- Some owners are confused by the opening description, and expect a sensor that their unit does not behave like
- A few report the premium tier feeling hard to justify against the STEP, which shares the bag system
- Owners note the pail still needs Munchkin-system refills, despite the universal wording
| Includes | UV Snap, Seal and Toss bag plus UV refill ring |
|---|---|
| Compatibility | Munchkin refill rings, Snap, Seal and Toss bags, Nursery Fresh refills, per listing |
| Model | 38304 |
| Colour | White |
| Bag system | Snap, Seal and Toss self-sealing bags |
| Use | Baby diaper disposal |
Best for: Parents who already own Munchkin refills and want one pail that does not force a single refill line.
Skip if: You want the cheapest Munchkin route; this is the premium pail, and its UV branding does not change the bag routine.
Best budget lifetime cost
Baby Trend Diaper Champ Diaper Pail
The ordinary-bag classic: a flip-handle pail that takes regular kitchen bags and seals them behind a weighted cylinder.

Strengths
- Uses regular kitchen trash bags, so there is no proprietary refill to stock or run out of
- Flip-handle and weighted cylinder system drops the diaper into the bag and seals the opening behind it
- Long-running design with a handle and a sturdy body that suits a second changing spot or a childminder's room
- No refill subscription or special bag size to remember, which keeps lifetime cost low
Limitations
- The handle must be flipped over and back, per the maker guidance, or the seal does not work as designed
- A hand is needed for every drop, unlike a foot-pedal pail, which matters with a baby in arms
- Odor control depends on technique and bag-change frequency more than on a filter or clamp system
What owners report
Most praised
- Parents say the best thing about the Champ is never buying a special bag again, just using the kitchen bags already in the house
- Owners like that the pail is sturdy enough to survive a move, a second child and a childminder's daily use
- Families say odor stays low when the handle is flipped properly and bags are changed regularly
Common complaints
- Some owners admit they skipped flipping the handle back, and then wondered why odor escaped
- A few report a puff of stale air on opening, which foot-pedal and trap-door pails handle better
- Owners note the design looks dated next to steel and foot-pedal pails, even though it works
| Bags | Regular kitchen trash bags, no proprietary refill |
|---|---|
| Operation | Flip handle with weighted cylinder |
| Seal | Cylinder closes the opening after each drop |
| Use | Baby diaper disposal, including second changing spots |
| Colour shown | White with blue trim in the listing photo |
| Cost model | Pail plus ordinary bags only |
Best for: Parents who want the lowest lifetime refill cost and already buy kitchen trash bags in bulk.
Skip if: You want hands-free use; the flip handle needs a hand, and the drop must be flipped back to seal properly.
Best for travel
Munchkin Toss Portable Diaper Pail, 5 Pack
The portable pail: five freestanding disposable pails for travel, the car and grandparents, with no refill system at all.

Strengths
- Five pack holds up to 150 newborn diapers in total, per the maker, so one pack covers a trip
- Freestanding disposable design needs no installation, no pedal and no refill ring
- Small at 5.6 x 7.25 x 8.25 inches per unit, so it fits a car footwell or a hotel corner
- Light pack at 12 ounces, easy to carry as a spare in luggage
Limitations
- Disposable means repeat buying, and the per-diaper cost is higher than a permanent pail with ordinary bags
- The small opening and short body suit newborn and small diapers better than bulky toddler diapers
- There is no clamp, filter or seal system, so odor control is just a closed disposable container
What owners report
Most praised
- Traveling parents say the Toss pails turn a car boot or hotel corner into a contained changing station
- Grandparents like receiving a pack, since there is nothing to install and nothing to learn
- Owners say the pack is light enough to live in a travel bag until it is needed
Common complaints
- Some owners find a single unit fills fast on a long trip, and the pack runs out sooner than planned
- A few report the disposable body feeling flimsy next to a permanent nursery pail
- Owners note odor escapes sooner than with a sealed pail, because there is no clamp or filter
| Pack | 5 disposable pails |
|---|---|
| Pack capacity | Up to 150 newborn diapers in total, per maker |
| Unit size | 5.6 x 7.25 x 8.25 in |
| Pack weight | 12 ounces |
| Model | 17267 |
| Use | Travel and portable diaper disposal |
Best for: Traveling families who need a contained diaper bin in a car, a hotel room or a relative's house.
Skip if: You want a permanent nursery pail; these are disposable units, and the pack is a consumable, not a fixture.
Best slim pail
Janibell Akord Slim Diaper Pail, 7 Gallon
The slim continuous-liner pail: a 7 gallon foot-pedal body with a double seal, built for tight spaces and caregiver use.

Strengths
- Slim 7 gallon body at 11.8 x 10.2 x 20.5 inches, for gaps where a wide pail will not fit
- Hands-free foot pedal, so the pail opens without a hand on the lid
- Double-sealed odor reduction, per the maker, with a continuous liner system
- Continuous liner can be cut to length, so a half-full load does not waste a full bag
Limitations
- The Janibell liner system is less widely stocked than Diaper Genie or Dekor refills in baby shops
- Marketed heavily for adult diaper use, so baby buyers should check liner sizing before ordering
- The slim body holds less than the wide Genie and Dekor pails, so emptying comes sooner
What owners report
Most praised
- Caregivers say the slim body fits beside a bed or chair where a standard pail would block a walkway
- Owners like the continuous liner, since they cut only what the load needs instead of wasting a fixed bag
- Families say the double seal holds up in a room that is used all day, not just at changing time
Common complaints
- Some baby buyers find Janibell liners harder to source locally than the big baby-brand refills
- A few report the slim opening struggling with very bulky adult or toddler items
- Owners note the pail looks clinical next to nursery-styled pails, which matters in a baby's room
| Capacity | 7 gallons |
|---|---|
| Dimensions | 11.8 x 10.2 x 20.5 in |
| Opening | Hands-free foot pedal |
| Seal | Double-sealed odor reduction, per maker |
| Liner | Continuous liner system |
| Model | M280DA |
Best for: Caregivers and small-space families who need a narrow pail with a continuous liner and a strong double seal.
Skip if: You want a baby-specific refill you can buy in any baby aisle; this is a Janibell liner system, not a baby-brand refill.
How we chose
The seal is the pail
A diaper pail has one job between bag changes: keep smell inside. Steel bodies, double clamps, carbon filters, trap doors, self-sealing bags and baking-soda cartridges are all different answers to that job, and they do not work equally. A lid alone is the weakest answer, because every opening lets stale air out. A clamp, a trap door or a self-sealing bag adds a second barrier, and that second barrier is what you pay for in the refill pails. Judge a pail by what happens when you open it, not by how it smells when it is closed.
The bag system is the lifetime cost
The pail is a one-time buy, but the bag system is a two-year subscription. Ordinary-bag pails, Ubbi and the Diaper Champ, cost almost nothing to run and never run out of a special refill. Proprietary systems, Dekor, Genie and Munchkin, seal better in some designs but lock you into one refill line, one size rule and one shop. Before choosing, check that your refill size fits your exact pail size, especially with Dekor, where Plus, Classic and Mini refills are not interchangeable.
Opening style decides the 3 a.m. test
At night, with a baby on one hip, a foot pedal is the easiest opening, because both hands stay free. A sliding lid, as on the Ubbi, needs a hand but disturbs less air. A flip handle, as on the Champ, needs a hand and a two-way flip to seal properly. None of these is wrong, but they feel very different when you are tired. Choose the opening you will actually use correctly every time, because a seal only works when it is closed properly.
Capacity figures need translating
Makers quote newborn diapers, litres or gallons, and none of those maps cleanly onto your household. A refill that holds 270 newborn diapers may hold far fewer toddler diapers, and a pail that holds 47 diapers still needs emptying weekly even when its refill box promises 846. Translate every figure down for larger diapers, and buy the pail size for the diapers your child wears now, not the newborn figures on the box.
Questions, answered
Which diaper pail smells least?
No pail eliminates odor completely. Steel bodies resist absorbing odor, double clamps and trap doors add a second barrier, and carbon filters and baking-soda cartridges help between changes. The biggest factors are still bag-change frequency and closing the pail properly every time, because even the best seal fails when a lid is left ajar.
Do I need special bags for a diaper pail?
It depends on the pail. Ubbi and the Diaper Champ take ordinary trash bags. Dekor, Diaper Genie and Munchkin pails use their own refills, and the sizes are brand-specific. Dekor refills are also size-specific within the brand, so a Plus refill does not fit a Classic or Mini pail.
How often will I empty a diaper pail?
More often than the box suggests. Newborn capacity figures assume small diapers, and toddler diapers fill a pail faster. As a rough guide, a mid-size pail in a newborn household may need emptying every few days, and a small pail may need daily emptying. Emptying before the bag is overfull also keeps odor down, because an overstuffed bag strains the seal.
Can I use a diaper pail for cloth diapers?
Yes, with the right pail. Look for a wide opening, a body that wipes clean, and a liner you can wash or replace cheaply. The Dekor EKO Plus is the strongest pick here, because the maker highlights cloth use and a wide opening, and the Ubbi and Diaper Champ also suit cloth because they take ordinary bags you can swap freely.

- Topic hubDiaper Pails
- A small nursery punishes a wide pail. This ranking starts with footprint, not odor technology, because a pail that blocks a drawer or a door swing will be moved, and a moved pail gets used badly. Width, weight and emptying frequency decide the order, with the seal system as the tie-breaker.The Best Diaper Pails for Small Nurseries (2027)
- Hands-free is a spectrum, not a label. A foot pedal that opens a lid is hands-free. A pedal plus a trap door that closes itself is more hands-free still, because no hand touches the lid at all. This ranking separates pails that only free one hand from pails that free both, and it penalises any pail whose seal needs a second touch to close. The Best Hands-Free Diaper Pails (2027)
- Cloth diapers change the pail brief. They are bulkier, wetter and heavier than disposables, and they stay in the pail until wash day, so odor has longer to build. This ranking therefore starts with opening width and liner freedom, not with disposable refill length, because a pail that cannot take a stuffed cloth diaper, or that forces a disposable refill, is the wrong pail for cloth. The Best Diaper Pails for Cloth Diapers (2027)
