Squirrels Emptying Your Bird Feeder? Fixes (2027)

A feeder that squirrels empty daily is usually beaten by placement, not by a faulty mechanism. Five ordered fixes, from launch points to mechanism choice.

The feeder is empty, the squirrel is fat, and the mechanism worked perfectly in the shop description. Work through the causes in order: launch points that bypass the mechanism, pole access, seed that invites pests, mechanism tuning, and only then the mechanism itself. Most squirrel stories end at step one, which is also the cheapest fix.

Squirrels reach the feeder without loading the mechanism

Move the feeder at least 8 to 10 feet from any branch, roof, fence or structure a squirrel can launch from, and trim back overhanging branches. A squirrel that drops onto the feeder from above never touches a weight perch, shroud or ring, so no mechanism can stop it. This single move fixes more squirrel problems than any feeder upgrade, and it costs nothing but a new hook position.

The pole is a ladder, not a mount

Fit a pole guard or baffle below the feeder on any pole mount, positioned high enough that a squirrel cannot jump over it from the ground. Smooth metal poles slow squirrels but do not stop them, and a guard placed too low is simply a stepping stone. Check the guard after storms and growth, since a shifted guard is a failed guard.

The seed invites squirrels more than birds

Switch from mixed seed heavy with corn and millet, which squirrels and pest birds love, to black oil sunflower or safflower, which target birds prefer and squirrels like less. Nyjer in a finch tube is squirrel-resistant by seed choice alone, since squirrels show little interest in it. Seed choice will not stop a determined squirrel, but it stops feeding the casual ones for free.

The weight mechanism is tuned for the wrong garden

Check the tension or weight setting against your actual visitors. A setting loose enough for heavy songbirds admits light squirrels; a setting tight enough to exclude squirrels shuts out cardinals. Adjust in small steps over a week of watching, and remember that a mechanism tuned for one garden season may need retuning as different birds arrive.

The mechanism class is wrong for the siege level

If placement, guards, seed and tuning are all correct and squirrels still empty the feeder daily, step up a mechanism class: from budget weight perches to a tunable shroud, from a shroud to a spinning ring, or from any moving design to a passive cage for small birds. Each step costs more or excludes more birds, so treat it as a last resort rather than a first purchase, and keep the old feeder as a second station for the birds the new one excludes.

Questions, answered

Should I grease the pole to stop squirrels?

It works briefly and it is not recommended: grease washes off, stains, and can coat bird feathers when birds contact the pole. A proper guard or baffle does the same job permanently and safely. If you have already greased a pole, clean it off and fit a guard instead.

Will a squirrel guard work on a hanging feeder?

Guards suit pole mounts best. On a hanging feeder, the equivalent is clearance: hang it far from launch points and use a dome or baffle above the feeder to block drop-in access. A hanging feeder with a branch overhead needs moving, not guarding, since the branch is the problem.

Do squirrels give up eventually?

Individual squirrels learn and move on to easier food, but gardens always have new squirrels, so the problem is permanent rather than a phase. The goal is a system that makes your feeder the hardest food in the garden, not a victory over one animal. Consistent placement and guards beat any single confrontation.
