The mirror says the look is perfect and daylight says otherwise. That gap is almost always light, not skill: the wrong colour temperature, brightness that flatters instead of revealing, or a viewing distance that hides mistakes. Work through the fixes in order, starting with settings, before blaming the mirror or buying a new one.

The light is too warm, so colours look softer than they are

Switch to the daylight or neutral setting for the main application, and save warm light for an evening check only. Warm-only light flatters foundation and blush, which is why the look changes outdoors. If the mirror has only warm light, add a daylight check at a window before leaving, and consider a mirror with a daylight setting for the next purchase.

Brightness is too high or too low for the check

Use full brightness for detail work such as liner and brows, then dim for a full-face check, since a face judged only at full brightness can look harsh in normal light. If the mirror has no dimmer, move the mirror further from the face or use room light alongside it for the full-face check, and treat a fixed-brightness mirror as a detail tool rather than a whole-look judge.

You are too close to a magnified mirror for a full look

Step back to the 1x side for full-face judgement and use magnification only for the detail task. A 5x or 10x face crops the view and exaggerates small flaws, so a look judged entirely in magnification will look uneven in real life. Finish every routine with a plain-view check at a normal distance.

Shadows fall on one side of the face

Move the mirror so its light surrounds the face evenly, and remove competing side light such as a bedside lamp on one side only. A ring or bulb mirror works only when the face sits centred in its light; an off-centre position recreates the one-sided shadow that bathroom ceiling lights cause. For trifold mirrors, adjust the side panels until both sides of the face receive equal light.

The mirror sits in the wrong place for its light

Place a vanity mirror at face height with no bright window directly behind the user, since backlight turns the face into a silhouette. Place a travel mirror on a stable surface at a comfortable height rather than holding it, since a moving mirror changes the light angle with every movement. If the room itself is dark, a bright folding mirror such as the deweisn 72-LED model may suit the space better than a dim vanity mirror.

Questions, answered

Why does my foundation look orange outside?

Usually the mirror light was too warm, which hides warm undertones in foundation. Apply under a daylight setting, then check at a window in natural light before leaving. If the mirror has no daylight setting, the window check becomes essential, not optional.

Why do my eyes look different in each mirror?

Different mirrors use different light colours and magnifications, and the eye adapts to each. Judge a look on one main mirror under daylight light, then use other mirrors only for detail tasks. Comparing a full look across three mirrors with three light colours will always produce three different faces.

Should I use a mirror with a window behind me?

No, if the window is behind you, since backlight darkens the face and the mirror light cannot compete. Face the window or sit beside it, so natural light supports the mirror light instead of fighting it.
