Start with the light, not the frame

Light decides whether a mirror helps or misleads. Look for even light at face height, a daylight-like colour option and a dimmer that covers bright detail work and soft evening checks. A beautiful frame with poor light is a decoration, while a plain mirror with good light is a tool. Check the light in the listing photos for evenness across the face, and prefer mirrors that state a colour temperature range rather than a single warm glow.

Choose magnification by task, not by number

Buy 1x for a true full-face view, 5x for brows, liner and skin detail at a comfortable distance, and 10x only for lashes, contacts and tweezing at a very short distance. A mirror that offers only 10x will frustrate a full routine, while a mirror with only 1x will frustrate detail work. The most flexible setups pair a 1x or 5x main face with a separate or attached magnifier, as in trifold and double-sided designs.

Measure the counter and the bag honestly

Vanity mirrors need counter width, depth and height clearance, especially trifold and Hollywood mirrors that exceed 13 inches when open. Travel mirrors need folded thickness and weight in a real bag, not just a product photo. Measure the vanity, the shelf height and the bag pocket before buying, and remember that a mirror that does not fit will live on a shelf instead of being used.

Power: corded, rechargeable or battery

Corded mirrors suit fixed vanities with an outlet in reach and never need charging. Rechargeable mirrors suit travel and counters without a handy outlet, but runtime at bright settings matters more than the headline figure, so plan a charging habit. Battery mirrors suit occasional use only, since battery cost adds up on a daily mirror. Sensor and touch controls are conveniences, not power sources, and they do not change this basic choice.

Mounting, cleaning and the second mirror question

Tabletop mirrors need a stable base and a flat surface; suction mirrors need smooth tile or glass; wall mirrors need a wall that accepts mounting and a renter's permission. Glass should be cleaned with a soft cloth and no abrasive cleaner, since scratches show most under bright light. Finally, decide whether one mirror must do everything: many buyers are happier with a main vanity mirror plus a small 10x detail mirror than with one compromise mirror that does neither job well.

Questions, answered

How much should I spend on a makeup mirror?

Budget trifold and folding mirrors cover the basics well for occasional and travel use. Mid-range mirrors add better light control, larger faces and rechargeable power. Premium mirrors buy sensor light, refined colour accuracy or creator features. Spend more when you use a mirror daily and colour accuracy matters; spend less when the mirror is for travel touch-ups or a first trifold test.

What size makeup mirror do I need?

For a daily vanity routine, an 8 inch face or larger is comfortable, and a wide trifold or Hollywood frame helps for hair checks. For travel, an 8 inch folding face is the largest practical size, while a 4 inch compact suits detail touch-ups only. Match the face to the job: full routine needs a large face, detail work needs magnification, not size.

Are Hollywood bulb mirrors better than ring light mirrors?

Neither is universally better. Bulb rows spread light wide across a large frame and suit dressing tables, while ring lights give even light in a compact round shape and suit smaller counters. Judge by evenness and colour range, not by bulb versus ring, and choose the shape that fits the counter.

How do I stop a suction mirror falling off?

Use it only on clean, smooth, non-porous surfaces such as glass, a bathroom mirror or smooth tile, press firmly to expel air, and engage the locking mechanism fully. Textured tile, grout lines and painted walls will not hold suction reliably, whatever the listing claims. If the surface is textured, choose a tabletop or wall-mounted mirror instead.
