Scrubbing systems: spinning, sonic or roller

Start here, because it decides cleaning results more than suction does. Spinning pads rotate under pressure and suit daily dirt and fresh spills. Sonic pads vibrate thousands of times per minute and suit dried stains in kitchens. Rollers wash themselves continuously and suit homes mopped daily on hard floors, since the mop never carries yesterday's dirt into the next room. Avoid passive drag cloths entirely: they spread a dirty film and cannot scrub.

The dock decides the workload

Read the dock specification as carefully as the robot's. Full stations empty dust, refill water, wash mops in hot water and dry them with heated air. Mid-range stations do most of that. Budget docks may only empty dust, leaving pad washing to you. Also check intervals honestly: a 60-day bin or 150-day station claim assumes average homes and run frequencies, and busy pet homes will refill sooner.

Carpet protection: lift, retract or remove

A robot mop must never wet carpet. The best systems lift pads by 10 to 12mm or more, retract pads fully, or detach pads for carpet-only runs, all automatically. Manual pad removal before every carpeted room defeats automation and gets skipped, which is how rugs get wet. If your home is mixed floor, automatic protection is a requirement, not a nice extra.

Navigation: LiDAR, cameras and avoidance

LiDAR mapping gives neat rows and room-by-room control. Cameras add object recognition for cables, shoes, bowls and pet mess. Structured light and time-of-flight sensors help in tight spaces and low light. A robot that maps badly, stalls on thresholds or tangles on cables will not finish the house, however strong its mop is, so weigh navigation alongside cleaning specs.

Suction figures and why they mislead

Pa suction figures are maker ratings measured differently by every brand, and some brands, notably Shark and iRobot on some models, do not publish them at all. Compare Pa only within one brand's lineup, and judge across brands by brush design, airflow, edge cleaning and published expert testing instead. A 22,000Pa robot with a poor brush and no edge cleaning loses to a well-designed 11,000Pa robot in a real home.

Running costs and floor space

Budget for bags, pads, filters, brushes and detergent over two years, not just the purchase price. Flagship consumables cost more, and some docks need proprietary detergent. Measure the dock, not just the robot: stations need level floor, side clearance and sometimes lid clearance above, plus a water source nearby for refills. A station wedged into a tight corner will be a station you resent.

Questions, answered

Do I still need a normal mop?

For daily maintenance, no. For stairs, ground-in grout stains, sticky spills left for days, and spot cleaning, yes, keep a hand mop. Robot mops replace routine mopping, not every deep clean a home ever needs.

Can a robot mop clean grout lines?

Roller mops and high-pressure spinning pads improve grout appearance over time, but deeply stained grout still needs manual scrubbing or a dedicated grout cleaner. Daily robot mopping prevents grout from getting worse, which is the realistic win.

How do I prepare floors for a robot mop?

Pick up cables, small rugs with tassels, and pet bowls on the first runs, then let mapping learn the home. After mapping, set no-go zones for problem areas and no-mop zones for rugs the robot should only vacuum. The first week is set-up; the payoff starts in week two.

What detergent can I use in the dock?

Use the maker's recommended solution unless the manual explicitly allows alternatives. Unapproved detergents can foam in the wash system, clog lines or void station warranties, and the saving is small against the cost of a dock repair.
