A smart display that stops responding usually has one of five causes, and they are all cheaper than a replacement. Work through them in order: power, wake word and microphones, Wi-Fi, software, and finally placement. Most dead displays revive at step two or three, and the ones that do not have usually told you why on screen before going quiet.

The display does not respond to its wake word at all

Check the microphone switch first: both Alexa and Google displays have a physical mic mute that silences the wake word entirely. Then check power: a loose barrel connector or a switched-off outlet mimics a dead device perfectly. If the screen is lit but the wake word fails, retrain the voice profile in a quiet room and remove background noise sources like a running extractor fan.

The display answers sometimes and ignores you other times

This is usually a microphone distance or noise problem, not a broken device. Move the display away from the sink, the extractor and the television speaker, and speak from within the room rather than shouting from the next one. If the problem follows one person, their voice profile may need retraining after a cold or a voice change.

The display drops Wi-Fi or says it cannot reach the internet

Restart the display, then the router, then check whether other devices on the same network still work. Displays on the edge of Wi-Fi range drop first because they stream video constantly. Move the router closer, add an access point, or move the display to a nearer outlet. A display that only fails in one spot has a signal problem, not a hardware problem.

The screen is dark, frozen, or stuck on a logo

Hold the power button for a full restart, and leave the display unplugged for thirty seconds before reconnecting. If it boots to a logo and freezes, check for a pending software update over a wired-adjacent Wi-Fi connection, and factory reset only as a last resort, since a reset erases routines and device pairings that take an afternoon to rebuild.

The camera works but video calls fail, or calls connect without video

Check the camera shutter or software camera switch first, then the other party's app and permissions. A shutter left closed after a private evening is the most common cause of a black video feed. If calls connect without video on one contact only, the problem is on their device, not yours, and a test call to a different contact will prove it in a minute.

Questions, answered

When should I factory reset a smart display?

Only after power, microphones, Wi-Fi and a full restart have all failed, and only when you have time to rebuild routines and pairings. A reset fixes corrupted settings, but it erases everything personal on the device. Back up nothing, because displays store their data in the cloud account, and simply sign back in after the reset.

Why does my display respond to the television but not to me?

Television dialogue can contain words close enough to the wake word to trigger the display, especially with the volume high. Lower the television volume, move the display away from the TV speaker, and adjust the wake sensitivity in settings. It is a placement problem, not a hearing problem.

My display stopped controlling my lights. What changed?

Usually a device, not the display: a bulb that lost Wi-Fi, a skill that needs relinking, or a hub node that moved. Check the light in its own app first. If the app works and the display does not, disable and re-enable the skill or integration, then re-discover devices. The display rarely forgets; the link between it and the device breaks first.
